ST. LOUIS—If there’s anywhere you wouldn’t be surprised by a jazz composer’s new opera about a boxer, it’s Opera Theatre of St. Louis. In 38 seasons, the company has presented 23 world premieres and 23 American premieres; even standard repertory gets imaginative stagings. All operas are sung in English, in the compact 987-seat, thrust-stage Loretto-Hilton Center at Webster University, in suburban Webster Groves.
