ST. LOUIS—If there’s anywhere you wouldn’t be surprised by a jazz composer’s new opera about a boxer, it’s Opera Theatre of St. Louis. In 38 seasons, the company has presented 23 world premieres and 23 American premieres; even standard repertory gets imaginative stagings.
